Triana is not just another Seville neighbourhood: it is the other bank of the river, with its own identity, its own anthem, even its own accent. Crossing the Isabel II bridge (the Triana bridge) takes you into the Seville of potters, sailors and flamenco. Entire dynasties of flamenco singers were born here, and the ceramics that decorate half the city are still made here: the workshops of Calle Alfarería and the Centro Cerámica Triana tell that story at street level.

Staying in Triana means living like a trianero. The day starts at the Triana Market, built over the San Jorge castle, among stalls of cured meats, cheeses and fresh river fish. Then comes a stroll along Calle Betis, Seville's most famous postcard: a row of coloured façades facing the Torre del Oro with the Giralda etched against the sky across the water. At night the same street becomes one continuous bar of tapas, wine and guitars.

For all its village character, Triana is a step from everything: the historic centre is a 10-minute walk across the bridge, and the metro (Plaza de Cuba station) links the rest of the city.
