La Macarena is the northern half of the old town and Seville's most lived-in neighbourhood. This is where the city prays to the Esperanza Macarena in her basilica, beside the gate and the best preserved stretch of the Almohad wall, and where food markets, old-school taverns and convents selling sweets through the turntable are still open for business.
The neighbourhood's spine is Calle Feria: its food market, one of the oldest in the city, and the El Jueves flea market, which fills the street with antiques and curiosities every Thursday. Around it, San Luis, San Julián, San Gil and Santa Marina gather Mudéjar and Baroque churches, small squares such as Plaza del Pumarejo and bars serving tapas at neighbourhood prices.
Everything here is walkable along quiet streets: the Setas de Sevilla and the Palacio de las Dueñas are a few minutes away, the Alameda de Hércules is next door and the Cathedral is a twenty-minute stroll. It is a great base if you want to live Seville the way locals do without leaving the historic centre. We have several apartments in the area, on Calle Macasta, Castellar, Arrayán and Esperanza: from a studio with its own street door to a ground-floor home with a double patio, and one with a parking space included.
